A Pilates set is judged as one product even though it contains four material families. The cheapest component can date the whole set and the most expensive one can carry it. The useful question is not which material is best, but which parts earn silicone.
Silicone: reserve it for skin contact
Silicone is stable, low in odour, tolerant of repeated cleaning and does not absorb sweat, which is why it belongs on rings, weighted bracelets and anything held for a full session. It costs more per kilogram and takes longer to tool, so a set usually reserves it for the two or three components a customer touches most. Platinum cure is the reference for skin contact: ask for the cure system and the extractables data rather than accepting "food-grade" as a specification.
TPE: the larger-format compromise
TPE is lighter, more recyclable and cheaper to mould at size. Grip sits slightly below premium silicone unless the formulation is tuned, so it suits mats, blocks and larger covers better than small handled parts. Specify density and hardness together, because a soft TPE block that dents in the first month is the component that generates the return. For a mat, confirm thickness tolerance as well, since a reorder that arrives half a millimetre thinner reads as a different product.
EVA foam: density, not thickness
Low-density EVA collapses within months and takes the perceived quality of the set with it. Specify density in kilograms per cubic metre, insist on closed-cell foam for anything that touches sweat or a mat, and check compression recovery on a sample rather than trusting the thickness figure. A 20 mm pad at the right density outperforms a 30 mm pad at the wrong one.
Textiles: preshrink and certification
Confirm the fabric is pre-shrunk before cutting, or the cover will not fit after the first wash. If a performance or safety claim is being made, whether anti-microbial, recycled content or flame behaviour, ask for the certificate and keep it with the specification. Bonded thread and bar-tacked seams matter more on a short strap than on a bag, because the load concentrates over a much shorter length.
One colour reference across four materials
Fabrics, silicone, TPE and EVA render the same brand colour differently. Decide which material is the reference, then match the others to it within a stated tolerance. Doing this at sampling avoids the situation where a set arrives with four recognisably different versions of one colour.
The compliance file
One folder per programme: material safety data sheets for every polymer, the cure system for silicone, recycled content certificates where claimed, restricted-substance statements for the destination market, and the care instructions as printed. Buyers ask again at reorder, and re-requesting documents mid-production is what delays shipments.
Kit weight decides the shipping line
A set crosses a freight threshold long before it looks heavy. Add the components, the insert, the carton and the outer shipper, and compare the total against the carrier bands for the destination. Two kilos of difference changes the per-unit cost more than a small saving on one moulded part, and a set that ships at the lower band can be priced more aggressively without touching the material of the hero components.
Sampling matrix
Approve one complete set rather than one sample of each part, because the set is the product. Check that the components fit the insert, that the weights match across the pair, and that the finish is consistent between moulded and textile parts. Then keep that approved set as the golden reference for every reorder.
Send the component list, target price band and destination market and we will recommend where silicone earns its cost and where TPE or EVA does the job just as well.
Frequently asked questions
Which parts of a Pilates kit actually need silicone?
The skin-contact parts, such as rings and weighted bracelets: silicone is stable, low odour and tolerant of repeated cleaning. It costs more, so it is usually reserved for the hero components.
Where is TPE the better choice?
TPE is lighter and more recyclable, with grip slightly below premium silicone unless the formulation is tuned, which makes it practical for the larger-format components in the set.
How should EVA be specified?
Specify density, not just thickness: low-density EVA collapses within months and dates the whole set. Closed-cell EVA also resists moisture and odour far better than open-cell.
Why does one brand colour look different across a set?
Fabrics and polymers render the same brand colour slightly differently, so decide which material is the reference before the rest are matched to it.
What should be confirmed on the textile parts?
Confirm pre-shrunk fabric before cutting, and ask for certification if a safety claim is going to be made on the packaging.
